4 Ways to Keep Your Family Safe and Healthy this Halloween
1. Make an allergy plan for your child
Halloween can be a challenging time for children with food allergies. From trick-or-treating to classroom parties to family gatherings, there’s no shortage of sweet treats. Help your child enjoy the festivities by creating a plan that includes which candies and allergens to avoid. Consider stocking up on safe, allergy-friendly candy and give away the rest. Always stick to treats with labels and, if needed, have an EpiPen handy just in case.
2. Keep the festivities COVID-19 scare-free
One of the best ways to keep your family safe from COVID-19 this Halloween is to get vaccinated! When everyone who is eligible gets vaccinated, it helps protect the youngest and the most vulnerable among us.
Other ways to protect your loved ones include wearing a mask with your costume, choosing outdoor events when possible, and staying home if you’re sick or have COVID-19 symptoms.
3. Stay safe on trick-or-treating trails
If trick-or-treating after dark, put reflective tape on clothes, costumes, and bags so your child can be seen by drivers. Bring a flashlight too, and stay on sidewalks and crosswalks. If kids are heading out alone, give them a cell phone for emergencies. But ask them to keep the phone in their bag and avoid texting and trick-or-treating -- or they might go head-on with a pirate on a busy sidewalk.
4. Plan a spooky Halloween at home
If your community is experiencing a rise in COVID-19 cases, consider celebrating Halloween at home. Go wild with decorations and encourage your child to dress up in their favorite costume -- you can even host a costume party video chat with friends. Be sure to stock up on candy at home or make some spooky desserts to enjoy. And don’t forget about your favorite Halloween movies or Halloween-themed tv shows.
